Carlos" star Edgar Ramirez is set to topline Richard Kelly's next film "Corpus Christi," which Robert Rodriguez's Quick Draw Prods. will produce and finance.
A Darko Entertainment production, the thriller set in 2014 will find Ramirez playing Paciencia De La Rosa, an Iraqi war veteran with severe post-traumatic stress disorder who forges a dangerous alliance with a wealthy industrialist in Texas.
Producers include writer-director Kelly and his Darko partner Sean McKittrick, their longtime friend Eli Roth, and Rodriguez, as well as his Quick Draw partners Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic.
Pic, which will mark a departure into a more traditional narrative for the "Donnie Darko" director, will shoot on location in Austin and Corpus Christi in July.
"I started Quick Draw with the idea that it would be a home for innovative filmmakers who would be given the chance to take chances and surprise audiences. I think that a movie like 'Corpus Christi' could only be done justice by doing it independently," said Rodriguez.
"I was blown away by Edgar's performance in 'Carlos' and could not be more excited to have him playing the lead," said Roth. "Edgar's the perfect choice, and the combination of Edgar and Richard collaborating is electric. Having Robert Rodriguez as a producing partner rounds out an amazing creative team to support Richard in what I feel is his most compelling and exciting script to date."
Ramirez, who parlayed the success of "Carlos" into a co-starring role in Kathryn Bigelow's untitled thriller about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, signed on to "Corpus Christi" because the project will give him a chance to showcase his range as an actor. The Venezuelan thesp next stars as Ares in Warner Bros.' "Wrath of the Titans."
